According to the amount of time two equilibrium points with HCl can be calculated the amount of free amino APTS layer and protonated amino groups, that determine the amount of modification of APTS. Experimental error of this method tend to be higher to obtain an approximation of the amount of modified APTS.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFT) can detect APTS layer and gives a qualitative characterization of certain structural information. Satu and other use of the vapor deposition DRIFT APTS modified silicon dioxide were characterized. Compared with the unmodified silica APTS stretching vibration N- H after APTS-modified silica present in the IR spectrum 3378- 3370cm-1 and 3308- 3300cm-1, between 1595- 1590cm-1 appears bending vibration N- H in 2980- CH3 of C- H stretching vibration occurs between 2977cm-1, in 2935- 2930cm-1, CH2 of C- H stretching vibration occurs between. By N- H bending vibration and stretching vibration of CH2 can analyze the presence of hydrogen bonding type layer forms APTS amino group, an amino group and a hydroxyl group between silicon and aminopropyl arrangement. Shimizu et 120mlAPTS concentration 01083mol # L- toluene solution of 1-modified silica gel 40g, with DRIFT on modified silica gel APTS were characterized. Found that the resulting amino APTS layer mainly protons and form hydrogen bonds form, which hydrogen bond structure SiO-, H, NH2 +, aminopropyl mainly through hydrogen bonds to form a cyclic structure.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is the study of APTS layer elements method and an effective means of atomic states composition. APS-modified silicon dioxide was tested by XPS, resulting N1s two peaks, the electron binding energy, respectively 400eV and 402eV. The electronic low binding energy peaks corresponding to the free amino nitrogen atom, electron binding energy peak corresponding to the high hydrogen bond or a protonated amino nitrogen atom. In the APS layer mainly inner amino form hydrogen bonds with the protonated or form of existence, the outer surface layer APS amino mainly in the form of free amino groups present.
